Interviewing Tips
In today's highly competitive job market, the ability of Candidates to
effectively present their talents, skills, accomplishments and value
will often determine winning the opportunity or not. There are hosts
of well qualified industry experts (links herein) to provide a wealth
of assistance to your effort. In addition, JR Associates has
identified some critical interviewing tips to maximize your
effectiveness in front of prospective employers.
Do's
- Be on time
- Dress for success
- Never compromise your professional demeanor and attitude during
the interview
- Ensure you allow "all" the time needed for the
interview
- Be a good listener
- Be engaging; build chemistry and the relationship
- Answer the questions asked of you and be spontaneous and natural
with your responses
- Maintain eye contact with your interviewer
- Be prepared for your interview - know the company; research them
thoroughly (Internet, Annual Reports, company brochures, public
databases, etc.); understand the job
- Bring relevant materials and writing samples that demonstrate
your skills
- Volunteer information to support your presentation; be prepared
to talk about yourself in relationship to their needs
- Present your tangible skills of value and accomplishments that
are relevant to the needs of the employer
- Present your relevant intangibles of value that will ensure a
good match to the culture of the employer; employers want to know
your work environment, how you process, and by the end of the
interview, feel good about your ability to assimilate well into
their culture
- Have positively phrased questions for each interviewer regarding
the opportunity, their business, their services and products,
their vision, their mission, their growth plans, their people,
their competitive advantages, why people come to work there, and
why they stay
- Present your value added benefits to justify your hiring
- Re-summarize your value and relevancy with each interviewer
- Show interest and enthusiasm for the position, their company,
their products/services/applications, their industry, and their
people
- Before you leave, reiterate your level of interest and seek to
gauge their interest
- Create transition to the next step by asking what the next step
in the process will be, when it will occur, and when you can
expect to hear back from them directly or indirectly
- Turn off your cell phone and/or pager during the interview
Don'ts
- Be late
- Dress inappropriately
- Eat or drink during the interview
- Fail to bring in relevant materials or samples
- Lie or misrepresent the truth in what you say or what your
resume says
- Ask questions on compensation, benefits, or work hours
- Interrupt the interviewers
- Wander with your eyes and your comments off the target
- Be inflexible or rigid; don't be confrontational
- Forget to sell yourself and your capabilities
- Be fearful to gauge the prospective employer's interest level
