Resume Writing Tips
Most candidates have "two" chances to make a good first
impression ... and the first chance is YOUR resume. There are a
multitude of myths about style, length and content of a resume, and
most of these are taught by college professors and/or academic books
on the subject - not by people who understand the TRUTH about the
mission of a resume, its format, its content, or it's length. Your
resume is your marketing brochure; it needs to tell your story with
your stated relevancy to the opportunity you are seeking. Here are
some resume myths and JR's tips:
| Myths |
JR Truths |
| Keep your resume to one page. |
How many one page books have your ever read? A
one page resume indicates a short story. Don't ever sacrifice
relevant content for brevity.
|
| Employers will not read a resume
beyond one page in length. |
They will if you have demonstrated relevancy to
their needs. They will if you have demonstrated your
accomplishments and your value. They will if your format is
appealing. Relevant details of tangible and intangible skills
and experience are always read.
|
| Resumes should only be
chronologically presented. |
Untrue, for many resumes, it is more logical to
present your experience by functional relevancy and/or areas.
